The Louvre II...
I was reading the newspaper today, and I saw an interesting article about the North of France. Apparently there are plans underway to put an annex of the Louvre somewhere in the north of France. Candidate cities include Calais, Arras, Amiens, Valenciennes, Lens, and Boulogne-sur-Mer. The Louvre II will include works of art that aren't currently displayed in the Louvre in Paris, in an attempt to bring tourism to the economically depressed North.
You can read a copy of the article from at the Sunday Herald.
I don't think that they should put a Louvre II in the north of France. Granted that the North is poor compared to the rest of the country, but I think they would be better off putting the museum in another part of the country, such as the Alsace, or Normandy.

North is perhaps poor but only financially... in domain of Culture it's one of the most dynamic and creativ land... Lille is not "European Capital Culture" for nothing... 5 millions of visitors in one year.. and the big party who are organised, was the most popular since this event was created...(600.000 persons on only few kilometers around - it's the same number as the people at the Champs Elysées when France win the World Football Cup in 98')...
We 've got ideas and a great tradition of Party... (this is perhaps because of our positionning between Uk, Belgium and Deutchland)
Personally i work at Lens in a culture structure (town in competition for Louvre Bis) and I think it was the biggest fake that our minister have never made... the coast of this operation is too much !!! and we cannot pretend to make influence of 500.000 visitor per year... we haven't got the infrastructure to absorb this number of people... so i we'll be perplex on this project...

I agree with the latter post. Except that that particular area is not that desperate ... they've got potential and could reach a much better economic situation with a good political leadership. Did you know people from the north often come to the south (to find a job) and are considered excellent workers (in comparison to local folks) ? Indeed they work hard because they got to bring the bacon ...

Anyway in my opinion, it's a non-sense to say that it shouldn't be built in a poor region ... well what else would you do to help dynamizing it back ? Bringing activity and tourism is probably the better thing to do.

(BTW, about the first post: northeast will probably be better off right where it is >> far from the channel :) Did you mean west ?)
